OTTAWA — It’s called the Romance Scam, and OPP say it cost Ontario victims almost $8 million in 2015.
The OPP Anti-Rackets Branch says criminals generally target single or recently-unattached people, usually through dating websites, social media, or by email, and strike up a relationship.
It quickly turns to requests for money or personal information.
216 victims lost $7.9 million to romance scams last year.
But police say 95 per cent of these crimes go unreported, often because victims are too embarrassed to come forward.
Police are reminding you not to give out personal information online, never to send money to someone you don’t know, and to be wary if someone you’ve never met in person declares their love for you when you’ve only been communicating for a short time.
