Former school office administrator charged with Theft over $5000

(Ottawa)—In October 2014, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) conducted an internal review and found that revenues typically generated from School Generated Funds were not received for the 2013-2014 school year at Roberta Bondar Public School. After the Board questioned staff, the employee suspected of taking these funds did not return to her position as the school’s office administrator. 

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board filed a complaint to the Ottawa Police and the ensuing police investigation determined that criminal charges were warranted. 

On March 21, 2018, Kathleen ST-GERMAIN, 45 years old, from Ottawa was charged with one count of theft over $5,000.  She was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in court on April 12.

Female suspect to identify in luxury vehicle scam

(Ottawa) –The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Unit is seeking public assistance in identifying a female suspect who has purchased some luxury vehicles. 

In the months of January and February 2018, the female suspect has fraudulently purchased several high-end SUV’s at local dealers in Ottawa. She uses fraudulent identification and forged documents to obtain auto financing loans to purchase the targeted vehicles. 

The female is wanted for multiple counts of Fraud over $5000, Theft of motor vehicle and other fraud-related offences relating to identity theft and uttering forged documents. 

She is described as a Caucasian female, slim build, with long dark hair (see pictures.)

Suspect sought in creating accounts using stolen IDs

The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Unit and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect who is using stolen identities.

The suspect has created fraudulent Rogers accounts using stolen identities. Using the stolen identities, the suspect then orders new Iphones to be delivered to victim’s home address. The suspect will then collect the ordered items.

The Ottawa Police Central Investigations Unit and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect who is using a stolen ID to open accounts.

In November 2017, the suspect used a stolen ID to open new accounts. The suspect has continued using the victim’s stolen identification and is still ongoing.

Beware of False Job Offers

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service is informing the public of the resurgence of a popular scam where people are being offered false employment opportunities.

The employment opportunities are offered on job sites, internet ads, unsolicited emails, unsolicited texts, or in the newspapers. On other occasions, people who are posting their résumé online are being offered jobs.

Those who respond to the ads are told that they have received the job and are then sent payment by cheque, e-transfer or other means, which they are then instructed to deposit into their bank account. They are then asked to send a large portion of the money to somewhere else; usually by purchasing pre-paid gift cards or depositing the money into a bank account provided to them by the suspects. Once they send the money on, the bank calls to inform them that the cheque or e-transfer was fraudulent and that their account is overdrawn or frozen.

Sometimes the job might be as a "secret shopper" to test the services of a bank, store, or money transfer service. On other occasions, the victim believes that they are helping the suspect set up a new business in the city.

Warning: Is that Donation bin legitimate?

(Ottawa) – In early December, 2017, an investigation was commenced by West Criminal Investigations in relation to complaints of donation bins being stolen in the West end. 

Investigators found that donation bins from legitimate charities had been stolen and rebranded for use by another company not affiliated to those charities.  

A 35 year old male was charged in January 2018 with Mischief and Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000. 

In light of these incidents, the Ottawa Police urges residents to research the company/name of any donation bin they are putting clothing or other articles into; and to look for not-for-profit charities they recognize.

Arrest Warrant for a parking scam suspect

 (Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Unit has issued an arrest warrant for Daniel MacKAY, 32 of Ottawa, for Fraud Under $5000 and Breaching his Recognizance.  

Between December 2017 and January 2018, MacKAY was placing advertisements on-line, renting parking spots in the downtown core and accepting money for those spots that did not exist.  

MacKAY is described as a white male, 6’ (183 cm), 185 lbs (84 kg), medium build, brown hair balding.  (view picture)
